Understanding Chin Implants
Nose jobs (rhinoplasty) get all the credit, but did you know that if you have a small, flat chin, your nose may seem more prominent? Getting a chin implant will easily improve your facial contours and even make your nose less noticeable. Many people who consider getting a rhinoplasty (nose job) are often surprised when their surgeon recommends a mentoplasty (chin implant augmentation) as well.
Or if you just want to improve your facial profile and image, a chin implant is definitely a wise choice for men and women alike. A chiseled, prominent chin is often associated with strength and confidence, whereas a small, flat chin is often called a “weak chin.” A well-defined chin helps give balance to the face and is a key part of a person’s profile. Dr. Jan Zemplenyi at Bel-Red Center for Aesthetic Surgery in Bellevue will use computer imaging to demonstrate the pleasing effect of a chin implant on the balance of the rest of your face. We see people from all over the Seattle area who are so thrilled that they underwent mentoplasty because their facial appearance improves so dramatically using just a small implant!
Following a small incision, the implant is inserted just below the skin of the chin. The implant is made of synthetic material that feels so much like the tissue naturally found in the chin that most people can’t tell the difference. The implant is available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes so you can find one that fits your face.
After surgery you’ll have a dressing that stays in place for about three days. There will be some mild tenderness but at the Bel-Red Center for Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Jan Zemplenyi will prescribe medicine to make you comfortable. Chewing may be limited so expect to be on a soft food diet for a few days following the surgery. The discomfort tends to last only a few days. Many of our patients in the Seattle area can resume normal daily activities in less than a week.
You’ll be surprised at how the shape of the chin has a remarkable influence on the overall appearance of the face and neck. For the next few days, take notice of people’s chins around you. It doesn’t take long to notice how much of a difference the chin can make on a person’s facial appearance and their overall image. You’ll see that improving the shape of the chin can have positive effects on other areas that you might not anticipate.
