Rhinoplasty (Nasal Cosmetic Surgery)

Nasal cosmetic surgery (rhinoplasty, nose job, nasal plasty) is one of the most commonly performed procedure by Dr. Zemplenyi at the Bel-Red Center for Aesthetic Surgery. Reshaping of the nose (rhinoplasty) can improve and restore harmony between the nose and the rest of the face. Whether a hump (bump) on the nose, a crooked outline, or the shape of the tip of the nose is the concern, all these can be addressed with rhinoplasty. Parts of the nose may be reduced in size whereas other aspects of the nose may be augmented (made more prominent) with a rhinoplasty in order to achieve improved proportions and aesthetic harmony. These changes are accomplished by reshaping the nasal framework (cartilage and nasal bone) while the overlying skin drapes over the internal structures altered by the rhinoplasty.

Septoplasty / Turbinoplasty

Mouth breathing, dryness of the mouth, stuffy nose, shortness of breath with exertion, and nasal or facial pressure can all be symptoms of nasal airway blockage. While not caused by nasal obstruction, snoring can be exacerbated by it. Nasal airway obstruction can be caused by several mechanisms and sites within the nasal passage.

Sinus Disorders & Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

When a patient with sinus problems is seen for the first consultation, nasal and sinus surgeon Dr. Zemplenyi needs to review the symptoms and type of treatment thus far received. It must be determined whether or not the patient really suffers from sinusitis or from other causes of facial pressure and headaches and whether exhaustive medical treatment has been received. Depending on this review, the patient and Dr. Zemplenyi will decide whether further medical therapy is warranted versus consideration of surgical treatment. Often, a CT scan of the sinuses will be ordered to better evaluate the involved anatomy. Aggressive medical treatment is tried before surgical therapy is offered. Allergy evaluation may also be needed.

Snoring & Sleep Apnea

Treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea comprises a significant portion of Dr. Zemplenyi’s practice. It is estimated that about sixty million of people in the United States suffer from snoring. While “heroic snoring” represents a significant, annoying social problem for spouses and roommates that can break up marriages and social relations, snoring also represents a marker for a potentially serious medical problem called obstructive sleep apnea.

Rhinophyma

Rhinophyma is not a new condition, afflicting persons living in the Middle Ages.  Its cause is not entirely known but it occurs in the later stages of acne rosacea.  In the early stages of rosacea the skin becomes flushed as blood vessels expand.  As rosacea progresses, the skin becomes more sensitive with small bumps forming on the nose, cheeks, eyelids and chin. As damage to the skin’s blood vessels progresses,  the skin thickens, pore size increases and the sebaceous glands (oil glands) become more prominent.  While rhinophyma can affect men or women, it is much more common in men — generally occurring in Caucasian men in their 40s to 60s.
