Selphyl – Platelet Rich Plasma

By releasing the natural power of your own platelets Selphyl ™ provides an exciting, FDA-approved treatment for wrinkles, acne scars and skin rejuvenation. Selphyl is a unique product that uses Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in a fibrin matrix (PRFM) gel.

Platelet rich plasma allows the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at an accelerated rate. During the normal healing process, the body rushes many cells and cell-types to a wound in order to initiate the healing process.  Platelets are one of these very important cells. In the wound, platelets naturally perform multiple functions including formation of a blood clot and release of growth factors (GFs). These GFs (platelet-derived growth factors) include transforming growth factor beta (TGF), and insulin-like growth factor (ILGF) that assist the body in repairing itself. These factors stimulate stem cells to regenerate new tissues.  Healing is accelerated as more growth factors and stem cells become stimulated.

During your treatment with Selphyl, Dr. Zemplenyi obtains a small sample of blood collected into a test tube.  This blood is then centrifuged and specially processed to separate the platelets from red and white blood cells. The plasma layer rich with platelets is now treated to form a fibrin gel thus trapping the platelets within. Upon injection or application to a target site such as wound surface the fibrin gel matrix prevents allows the platelets to remain in the tissue for several days.   The trapped platelets gradually release the growth factors leading to faster healing and skin rejuvenation. The PRFM gel may be injected or applied to a wound following a micro-needling procedure. Thus Selphyl ™ uses patient’s own platelets to rejuvenate skin over next few weeks as new collagen and blood vessels develop. The process of injection of your own platelets naturally enhances the healing process and avoids any risk of an allergic or foreign body reaction. The procedure is performed by Dr. Zemplenyi in at the Bel-Red Center and takes less than one hour.  Dr. Zemplenyi recommends cold compresses applied to skin to diminish bruising and swelling.

Selphyl ™ can be used in any area of the face and body.  Selphyl is used to treat to rejuvenate skin and to treat acne pock marks and scars. Dr. Zemplenyi recommends a series of two treatments separated by six weeks to allow for formation of new collagen.  Patients of all ethnicities can benefit from Selphyl ™ treatments, and there are only few categories of patients who would not be candidates.  These include patients with history blood clotting issues, patients on blood thinners and those with active skin infections.
