What is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?

Platelet Rish Plastma Treatment - Bel-Red CenterFor years platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been used to assist in the recovery of injuries. Now it is being used to improve skin texture and remove unwanted lines and wrinkles. It is commonly used to rejuvenate the skin under the eye but can be applied anywhere where there is aged and wrinkled skin. This treatment is performed by gathering platelets, rich in growth factors, from your blood and applying them to areas needing rejuvenation. The results are gradual but faster healing can typically be seen within the recovery period.

How does it Work?

The first part of this procedure is to draw blood from the patient’s arm as would be done in a blood test. The vial of blood is then put in a centrifuge to spin and separate the different components of blood (blood cells, plasma, and platelets). While the centrifuge is operating the patient can be treated by procedures such as fractionated CO2 or micro-needling. After the concentrated sample of platelets is prepared it is mixed with a calcium chloride solution to stimulate the treatment. The sample can then be gently spread onto the treated area to promote healing or injected under the skin in an area of scar or need of volume restoration. There the platelets, designed to cause clotting, release enzymes to promote induce collagen production for more youthful, firmer skin in the treated area.

How are the Results?

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is an effective procedure that delivers amazing results that typically last for two years. Healthier skin will be apparent in the weeks and months following the procedure with some patients seeing improvements in their skin up to 6 months after the initial treatment. To ensure optimal results, it is recommended that three session be performed at one month intervals. To maintain results patients can undergo maintenance treatments on a yearly basis.

What are the Side Effects?

Platelet Rich Plasma stands out in skin treatments due to the fact that it does not use a foreign substance-it utilizes your own tissue. This means that there is no risk of rejection, since only your own natural biological material is used. So essentially you are improving yourself by using yourself! As far as side effects to the procedure itself, redness or bruising around the treated area are common and typically subside within a week.
