What Is the New Rhinophyma Treatment?

bel-red-laser-resurfacing-rhinophyma-1aAre you unhappy with the appearance of your nose? It is enlarged and red – with thickened, oily skin appearing over time? These symptoms describe rhinophyma.

The causes of this condition is speculative, and in the past many thought it was due to excessive drinking. Now, not so much.

Rosacea however, is a common denominator in patients, and other telltale signs include protruded oil glands; and thick, reddened skin. The condition is most predominant in men, though women may experience this too. Another popular term for this condition is a bulbous nose.

The condition can be socially and emotionally debilitating as afflicted individuals avoid social contact.

Treatment Options for Rhinophyma

There are multiple ways to treat rhinophyma

  • Acne Medicines – topical treatments can be applied in mild forms of Rhinophyma to decrease the redness and swelling experienced in patients.
  • Surgery – can range from non-invasive methods like lasers to scalpels used to remove the affected skin layers.

Exploring Surgery for Rhinophyma

Surgery sculpts the excess skin growth to a more natural shape as the surgeon pares down the outer skin using one of several methods:

  • Laser Resurfacing
  • Dermabrasion
  • Electrocautery
  • Intense Pulse Light Technology or IPL

Or a combination of two or more methods – depending on the extent of the condition.
These steps are minimally invasive and require little downtime. To reduce any discomforts, topical or IV sedation may be applied.

What to Expect After Treatment

The skin renewal process may take several weeks, but this doesn’t deter patients from carrying on with everyday life. In the meantime, makeup can be used to cover the affected area.
Other tips post-surgery include staying out of the sunlight and applying moisturizers.

Things to Know

Once treatment is performed, the condition may recur but by keeping skin conditions like rosacea in check the chances of recurrence is reduced.
